Adopt a Tree 2024

Executive summary

This is a continuing education and tree planting project that is aimed at teaching primary school learners on tree planting and engaging in planting trees in their schools and at their homes. In this plan, a child takes care of the trees they plant both at school and at home up to maturity: adopt a tree! This is coupled with education on climate change and proper soil maintenance practices.

Problem statement

The continued indiscriminate cutting of trees has resulted into unavailability of water for the community, increased temperatures, reduced farm yields and general surge in poverty. The members of the target community are in dire need to develop and increase their forest cover and secure their water catchment areas and improve their soil conservation. Lack of requisite education and information is the main hinderance to these.

Project Justification

The main target of this project is to increase the tree cover and imparting climate education to the young population so that we have climate conscious generation.

This is an environmental program that is designed as a means of conserving the environment with particular emphasis to schools and the communities around them. This program has among its components, issues that address health, water and sanitation, environmental awareness, tree planting with particular emphasis to multipurpose trees and species especially fruit trees for nutrition in schools and woody trees for the community.

The overall target is engaging all schools and their communities in this program

Project objective:

The overall objective of this project is to increase tree cover while providing generations of children with healthy nutrition options and environmental education

Specific Objectives

  • To plant different species of trees in schools and the surrounding community
  • To pass on environment education for protection of our environment.
  • To provide good learning environments for children

Engaging primary schools in planting trees will see us reach many people both in the schools and around the community. When all the children are engaged in adopting trees, it will ensure that most of the trees survive to maturity and in so doing, there will be increase in tree cover. Planting fruit trees will be more encouraging as the children will have nutritional benefits form the fruits.

As we engage the children in climate education and setting up tree nurseries their parents too will be involved in planting the surplus seedlings generated.

Project activities

  • Environment Awareness

This helps the learners and their parents learn the value of planting trees, especially fruit trees and how to care for them with emphasis on environmental conservation

  • Demonstrations on Nursery Tree Establishments

The target beneficiaries are taught how to stablish tree nurseries, care for trees and also simple techniques of breeding such as grafting plants for better quality breeds.

  • Tree planting

This involves teachers, parents and the learners. The seedlings are from the tree nurseries established in schools. The learners are taught how to raise trees and each is given seedlings to plant and tend to. They plant at least four trees both at school and at home.

Monitoring and Evaluation

There is participatory monitoring and evaluation

Methodology of implementation

There is a dipartite partnership involving the teachers, learners and the parents. The contribution of each party is as follows:

  • Teachers
    • Project design, planning & management
    • Acquisition of seeds
    • Technical support and oversight on tree planting and management
    • Trainings
    • Monitor and evaluate
    • Produce report and accountability
  • Learners and parents
    • Planting and maintenance of trees
    • Maintenance of tree nurseries

When you educate a child about climate change, you educate a whole generation!

Project updates

From the funds received during GG19, we were able to:

1. Train 200 learners

From the funds we purchased training materials and trained the learners in

  • the effects of cutting trees
  • important of planting trees
  • taking care of the soil
  • planting trees and taking care of them
  • good seed selection
  • establishing a viable tree nursery

2. Plant 236 trees

From our learning, we established our first tree nursery. From the nursery, we were able to raise seedlings which we planted around the school. Each of the 200 trained learner planted a tree which they are taking care of. We had 30 parents and six teachers planting trees as well. We therefore planted 236 trees. These trees can be viewed here https://map.treetracker.org/planters/17737?bounds=33.97521972656251,0.016479491960279726,35.02990722656251,0.8980955453989664

Future plans

  • We have a plan to have all schools in Kenya under this program.
  • Have the parents enroll on crypto support for tree planting.
  • Plant trees in all school communities

Children, Trees and NFTs

What are we doing?

As I teach the learners in my school about climate change, essentially planting trees and taking care of them, I feel that this is just a drop in the ocean. This is just one school in Bungoma, western Kenya with only 200 trees planted. This is the beginning and the ultimate goal is to see every Kenyan school going child equipped with climate knowledge and the skills of planting and taking care of trees…a very green country, isn’t it? 😊I can only imagine

The Plan

This year, we intend to have more than five schools joining this project/program. This means more than 600 learners being taught. Learners being taught will be planting and taking care of four trees each, two trees at school and two trees at home. In three months, we will have planted more than 10,000 trees and with more than 600 learners aware of changes in the climate with the relevant knowledge on mitigation measures.

As these learners get this firsthand education and plant trees, their parents too will develop interest in planting trees, as I have already learnt. When the parents join in, it creates a great opportunity for agroforestry, thus greatly multiplying tree cover. This plan will see schools and the community plant 100,000 trees annually. With proper monitoring, this presents a great opportunity for carbon credits.

Why NFTs?

In order to implement the above plan, we need financing so as to get the learning materials, obtain seeds, gardening tools for our tree nurseries and stipend for the teachers involved. To raise these highly needed funds, we are creating NFTs from the pictures of our previous events. We hope that the sale of the NFTs will enable us generate the funds needed for the success of this project. We kindly request like minded people to join us on this. This is an open project that we welcome ideas that will enable us steer this project to its success.

Project Sustainability

To sustain this project, we will sell seedlings/saplings produced in our tree nurseries at a small fee so that we do seed collection and get the stipend for teachers. The educated learners will also pass the knowledge gained to others in the villages and throughout the community.

The Appeal

We understand the need for taking care of our mother nature. It is in this end that I kindly ask you to join us in ensuring that we have more trees to cool the planet and sustain life. This is a long-term project that is highly scalable. You can easily contact us for more information.

The scorching Sun and the scarce water.

With the unforgiving scorching sun, water has become scarcer this is affecting all kind of life here as I know it. I look at my learners with dry lips, dehydration evident in their eyes. Walking around the villages I see the cause for this …less trees, with no new ones being planted. I have been teaching them the importance of planting trees and now they can see what I have been talking about.
The rains are coming. They have learnt a lesson. They want to plant trees. Every child wants to own a tree. Now we have a plan. The plan is to establish tree nurseries, get seedlings so that each child owns a tree! They take care the tree and we call this …adopt a tree!
You too can adopt a tree…or two…or more. Get in touch with us.

adopt a tree!

Executive summary

This is a project that is aimed at engaging school children in primary schools in Kakamega and Bungoma Counties in planting trees in their schools. Each child will take care of the trees they plant: adopt a tree! This will be coupled with education on climate change.

Problem statement

Kenya’s forest cover has declined from 30% of land area in the 1960s to less than 2% at present. Many factors have contributed to this, including but not limited to: illegal logging to meet huge demands for fuel, wood, charcoal, and clearing of land for human settlement and agriculture. The statistics on the rates of tree planting (the supply) and tree consumption (the demand) in Kenya are depressing. For instance, to achieve sustainable supply of tree products and services in Kenya, over 200 million trees should be planted annually but less than 35 million get planted while an estimated 65% of the national demand for wood goes unmet. This demand keeps growing and less trees are being planted. Current tree planting efforts are severely constrained by a lack of good quality seed and slow inefficient traditional propagation methods.

The members of the target community are in dire need to develop and increase their forest cover and secure their water catchment areas, but cannot afford the provision of basics like seeds or the seedlings. The major problem faced by the community and which this intervention will address is the lack of the tree seedlings.

Tree planting project

Executive summary

This a continuing project seeks to involve children in 100 public schools in Western Province of Kenya (Five Counties) in setting up and maintaining tree nursery beds. From these nursery beds, we intend develop tree seedlings that will be distributed to the rest of the community for planting as an integration with their crops. We have a target of planting more than 95,000 trees in this phase which will take six months. This project aims at increasing forest cover and food security, therefore helping to reverse the effects of climate change. The program will be combined with climate change lessons from the World Climate School, from the program called ‘’Climate Change, The Fight of our Lives– from Emergency to Solutions ”

This intervention will be led by Eliud Omutanyi and Vision Farmers’ Organization in collaboration with the selected schools and the community.

Problem statement

Kenya’s forest cover has declined from 30% of land area in the 1960s to less than 2% at present. Many factors have contributed to this, including but not limited to illegal logging to meet huge demands for fuel, wood, charcoal, and clearing of land for human settlement and agriculture. The members of the target community are in dire need to develop and increase their forest cover and secure their water catchment areas but cannot afford the provision of basic like seeds or the seedlings. The major problem faced by the community and which this intervention will address is the lack of the tree seedlings.

Project justification

The major challenge in this community is to increase tree planting in a way that is sustainable, creates food security, supports income generation (where possible) for small-scale groups and grass-root communities – with an eye on the long-term vision of increasing the country’s forest cover and conserving the environment. Examples of organized, small-scale and grass-root communities that can be supported and empowered to spearhead and expand tree planting include schools, and women groups and youth groups.

In this project, we intend to develop three main types of tree seedlings, these are Woody trees, Medicinal trees, and Food trees. Woody trees will help in providing firewood and other activities that require wood therefore reducing the pressure on the little trees already present. Medicinal trees will provide herbs that will help in treating diseases among the community members while food trees will provide food in form of fruits, roots and leaves to the community. This will help in improving the general health status of the community. All these trees will be integrated with the food crops in an agroforestry setting.

Project objective

The main objective of the project is to create tree seedlings so as to integrate trees with crop farming and increase forest cover Western Province.

 Specific objectives

  • To train the community members on integration of trees with crops (Agroforestry)
  • To set up 1200 community tree nursery beds
  • To train and equip school children with skills on planting taking care of trees
  • To distribute tree seedlings to the target communities for planting
  • To plant more than one million trees in a year
  • To create vibrant agroforestry lands

Project overview

This project seeks to start making profits from the seventh month. This is from expansion of the existing tree nursery beds and selling the seedlings at a subsidized price. Due to the availability of ready market, it will be easy to realize the benefits and profits from the seventh month of the project.

Project activities

The project intends to embark on planting one million trees in one year. We seek to use participatory approach where the community members will take part in the project with everyone being allocated their specific activity. It will also be a learning area for other communities who might not be beneficiaries of the current project.

This is the breakdown of the project activities

  • Training the community members on agroforestry
  • Training selected school pupils on planting and tending to trees
  • Setting up and maintaining 1000 community tree nursery beds
  • Transplanting and distributing tree seedlings
  • Creating community awareness on maintaining forest cover

Project implementation plan and timelines

Community participation and contribution:

The community will participate in the identification of locations for the planting the trees since this project deals with their all-round well-being. During the implementation of the project, beneficiaries would contribute by:

  • Unskilled labor
  • Taking care of the seedlings
  • Provision of land for planting the trees
  • Planting the trees distributed together with their crops
  • Buying the seedlings.

Project sustainability:

It is expected that with the provision of funds, the project will be able to achieve its objectives. The profits gained from the sale of the seedling will ensure that this project continues after the funding has ended.

Monitoring and evaluation:

The project members and community are responsible for monitoring the project implementation and made necessary recommendations at general and executive meetings for effective decision-making. Observations, field visit and group discussions will form part of the participatory monitoring methodology.

Project participation

The implementation of this project is solely dependent on the participation of all interested and like-minded individuals and organizations. We therefore welcome you all to help us achieve this ambitious dream

Children in the midst of climate change

With the increasing effects of climate change globally, there has been actions being taken to tackle it. As this takes place, there has been silent suffering among children who bear much brunt of these effects of climate change. These risks are:

  • Insufficient supply of water. This puts them in the risk of spending long hours looking for water and sometimes having to spend the nights out looking for water.
  • High chances of children being married off. As the effects of climate check in coupled with Covid 19, parents have had their sources of income being cut thus finding it hard extremely hard to cater for all their children. This is forcing some of them to marry off their girls to receive some money as bride price and cut on the mouths to feed.
  • Children highly likely to miss school. As income sources for their parents dwindle, it becomes hard for them to keep their children in school.
  • Unavailability of food. Climate change has impacted so negatively on agricultural production. This resulted in reduced food output for families, thus hunger in some families is negatively affecting children.
  • Health risks. There are health risks affecting children these are hygienic, hunger related and psychological these have been as a result of the negative effects of climate change.

Being a teacher, I have been working with such children and taught them that these problems are as a result of climate change. We are therefore working towards reversing these effects. We are doing this through;

  • Teaching the children on climate change
  • Planting trees in nursery beds and distributing them to the community
  • Making collaborations with other likeminded people to fight climate change
Children preparing a tree nursery bed at school

We need you on board to help reduce the risks and help these children and a future they are dreaming of.

The Appeal

Planting more trees

The problem

In the face of environmental degradation and continued reduction in forests, there is an urgent need to restore our plant cover while protecting the existing ones all over the planet. It is in this end that we are working towards ensuring a marked increase in number of trees and protection from degradation.

Who is we

We are Vision Farmers’ Organization, a registered grassroots community-based organization working in western Kenya. Since our inception in 2010, there has been an impressive achievement in environmental restoration and tree planting.

Our aim

We intend to plant one million different species of trees in six months.

Our plan of action

We are teaming up with World Climate School , from the program called  ‘’Climate Change, The Fight of our Lives– from Emergency to Solutions ” to work with schools in Western Kenya to teach children on tree planting and maintenance. As we teach these children, this will be replicated in their homes thus bringing the whole community on board.

These lessons will include soil conservation, tree nursery establishment and maintenance, tree seedlings management and taking care of trees. This is to be replicated in more schools thus the communities.

This information imparted in children will be lifetime as they will grow up taking care of their planet.

We intend to plant the following tree species

Woody trees

  • Grevillea robusta
  • Sesbania sesban

Medicinal trees

  • Moringa (Moringa oleifera)
  • Red Stinkwood (Prunes africana)
  • Kassod Tree (Senna siamea)

Food/fruit trees

  • Banana
  • Mango
  • Avocado
  • Pawpaw

Our appeal

To achieve this, we need more like-minded individuals, organizations, corporations and institutions to walk with us through this life changing journey.

Collaborations

“Kidole kimoja hakivunji chawa’’, is a Swahili saying that insists on working together in unity. In this end, we are working with likeminded organization ‘Empowered Citizens’ towards realizing the change we desire for our community. This collaboration has resulted in

  • Fostering unity and spirit of cooperation among the community members
  • Improved crop output
  • Increased livestock production
  • Increased food production

Generally, the collaboration has led to improved livelihoods.

‘Empowered Citizens’ is a community based organization that works on improving the livelihoods of people of Western Province here in Western Kenya. The organization is agribusiness oriented and therefore trains the community on self sustainability through agriculture. Vision Farmers Organization works with ‘Empowered Citizens’ so as to realize the success of agroforestry. This working together has seeing trees being integrated with crops, thus boosting our reforestation efforts.

We look forward to working with more like minded individuals, organizations and institutions as we work towards reversing the effects of climate change.
